INTRODUCTION

Are you wondering how to make money blogging? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Today, I’ll walk you through my journey of how I made my first $10K blogging!

I’m Sebastian, and I’ve been in your shoes, wondering how I could turn my interest in writing into a profitable business. When doing my 9-to-5 sales job, I always wondered how to start my own business with low risk and become my own boss.

It’s much more rewarding to work for yourself and enjoy the results of your hard work than to work for someone else’s dreams.

As an introvert, I wasn’t ready to go out there on camera yet. And I have my French accent too, but whatever.

I could use my writing skills to make money online and earn passive income while promoting other businesses, hiding behind my screen.

And so, I started a new blog during the pandemic. I learned everything I could find on YouTube and Google about how to make money blogging. Today, my blog is a good source of passive income!

Let me show you some screenshots here.

EARNINGS PROOF

I will show you some proof of earnings so you know that making money blogging is real, not just a fantasy.

Watch the video below, where I show you some of my affiliate income streams:

Here are some of my affiliate earnings. I have blurred out a few brand names as it’s confidential. I’m not showing my earnings to brag; I want you to see that making money blogging is possible, and if I can do it, so can you.

Impact

Impact is a platform that is a trusted intermediary between you, the publisher, and the brands you promote.

That way, you get paid, and brands won’t game the system easily. I will later cover the leading publisher platforms I recommend and the best strategies I use to make money blogging.

My Impact dashboard shows I made around 5,500 euros this year, so over $6,000, by promoting 2 brands with affiliate marketing and using only free organic traffic from Google. If I can do it, you can do it too.

I also bring clients to many other companies outside of Impact, and I’ll show you the proof, even if I can’t cover all of them as I promote tens of brands. I will also refresh pages to show you that it’s actual data.

Your conversion rate and earnings potential depend on the brands you promote and market factors, so it’s good to work with many brands to reduce your risk, especially if one doesn’t perform well!

If I can do it, you can do it too.

Amazon Associates

In the video, you can see that I made over 1000 dollars with Amazon Associates. They don’t pay much, but you get small commissions for everything people buy within 24h after clicking your affiliate link. Everybody buys on Amazon, so you’re likely to make sales. You must have at least 3 sales within 6 months to stay in the program.

If you’re a beginner and want to sell physical products, I recommend you start with the Amazon Associate Program. It’s easy to apply and get accepted, and you will make sales fast, boosting your motivation. Later, you can still replace your Amazon links with other programs that pay better!

Partnerize

I also use Partnerize to promote another brand and made over 600 dollars in commissions this year. My conversion rate varies from brand to brand, and it doesn’t reflect what you can get, as it depends on your marketing skills. The best thing to do is to get traffic, apply to affiliate programs and learn along the way.

ShareASale

I made over 1500 dollars promoting a US brand on ShareASale.

Other affiliate income

I also got 800 dollars with a high-paying affiliate program for only 15 sales! I promote an expensive SaaS software with a recurring commission.

You can also see another affiliate program with 600 dollars pending and a standard 30% recurring commission rate, typical for selling software products. I also got about 300 dollars in payments from them.

Printful

I earned some commissions promoting Printful. Still, it’s not recurring, only for the first 12 months of the customer’s journey. You get a commission for each sale the customer makes in that timeframe.

Why blogging?

I’m still a small blogger, but there are larger blogs out there making $10K/month or even up to about $100K/month in revenue. The sky is the limit!

And guess what? Today, I’m giving away my secrets. I’ll be sharing a step-by-step guide on how to make money blogging. It’s perfect for beginners and even for those of you who’ve been blogging for a while.

Blogging is great, as you can create a money-making machine in the background of your life that brings you passive revenue every month, and you don’t even have to show your face.

You can also outsource the writing as you grow to scale your business.

And the best part is that with artificial intelligence (AI), you don’t even need to be a good writer anymore. You can use AI tools with good prompts to create persuasive and engaging content optimized for SEO, persevere and get your first sales, most likely within a few months.

Overview

In this comprehensive tutorial, I’ll guide you through six easy steps, from finding a profitable niche to scaling your blogging business.

Stick with me till the end, and you’ll have all the tools you need to make money blogging.

So, buckle up, and let’s get you on the road to your first $10K from blogging!

STEP 1: FINDING A PROFITABLE NICHE

First off, you need a niche – a topic you’re passionate about, or you have at least an interest in. It should also have the potential to make money

Choosing a niche is so important, as it will be a major factor in your ability to make money. You’ll also be stuck with it for years to build authority in your field.

So, you better think twice before you go ahead!

You don’t need extensive knowledge in your niche when you’re starting. You will learn over time if you’re interested in what you’re talking about.

It could be anything from gardening, fitness to tech, but the key is – that it should be in a lucrative niche. It’s also essential to go for a niche you like, as you will do it in the long run.

Can you imagine writing about home improvement or makeup for many years if you have absolutely no interest in the topic? Not me!

You should also be careful with the YMYL niche, which stands for “Your Money or Your Life.” It relates to all topics that can potentially impact someone’s happiness, health, safety, or financial stability.

For example, if you write about personal finance or health. In that case, you’ll have a hard time ranking on Google. You’ll have to prove even more that you can be trusted as an authority. It’s possible, but it will take you longer to get results.

You also need to be comfortable associating yourself with the niche and choosing a niche with enough demand not to lock yourself into a field with limited opportunities.

Here are examples of profitable blogging niches

  • Personal Finance and Investing
  • Make Money Online, Business, Marketing, and Sales
  • Technology
  • Web Development and Design
  • Hobbies: drones, photography, fishing, and more.
  • Crafts and DIY
  • Health and Fitness
  • Fashion and Beauty
  • Dating and Relationships
  • Parenting
  • Personal development
  • Gaming
  • Home Improvement
  • Pets
  • Food
  • Travel

Here’s how I found my niche:

I decided to go for the wealth niche, and especially the “Make Money Online” sub-niche, to help people create and grow their online businesses to reach financial freedom.

It’s a very competitive niche, so I knew I would not get results immediately.

It’s a topic I’m passionate about, and it’s also very lucrative as you can promote business software from SaaS companies. Demand exists because many people want to learn how to make money online.

But how will you make money blogging as a beginner?

You will typically make the most money as a beginner blogger with affiliate marketing. Later, as you get more traffic, you can put ads by joining an ad network and doing sponsorships.

You can even transition to selling your own products like online courses, e-books, or even software.

I’ll explain all of this in-depth later in the video while covering the monetization aspects.

STEP 2: SETTING UP YOUR BLOG

Next, let’s talk about setting up your blog. It’s easier than you think, and I’ll show you how. But remember, the first impression counts, so we need to make it look professional with a beautiful design.

Like all professional bloggers, you will host your site on WordPress. But be careful. You want to use WordPress.org, which is open-source and free!

Lots of beginners make the confusion with WordPress.com, which is a private company making money by selling WordPress via a subscription model.

They limit you and charge you a hefty monthly fee, while WordPress.org is free, open-source software.

Later, you’ll make money promoting brands, and they will approve your application more quickly if you have a self-hosted website using WordPress.org.

Web hosting

As you’re clever, you’ll get WordPress via a web host instead. Because yes, you need to host your website somewhere. It’s like if you build a house, you need to put it somewhere, on a nice piece of land, hopefully.

So, all you need to create your blog is a hosting provider and a domain name.

Most web hosts let you buy a domain name and install WordPress in 1 click, so it’s pretty simple. They take the open-source code from WordPress.org and use it to install WordPress on your hosting plan.

I created my first blog using Bluehost as a web host, and it’s the best value you can get if you’re getting started.

They give you a great deal for the first few years, so it only costs a few dollars per month. Later, as your traffic grows and you get more knowledge, you can easily switch to premium hosting providers and use the cloud instead.

Today I’m using Cloudways to host my blog, and I get super-fast loading time with my VPS server, but I don’t recommend going that route if you’re not technical.

If it’s your first blog, go for Bluehost, and you’ll be fine. It’s easy to set up and much less expensive than VPS hosting in the cloud.

Let’s dive now into choosing your domain name and setting up your WordPress blog on your preferred web host.

Domain name

Let’s start with your domain name. It’s your website address, so it’s important to use an impactful domain. It’s best to choose a .com domain to maximize trust unless you target your site to a specific country. I always pick a .com domain.

Choose a name that is brandable, short, and one people can easily remember

Many people who start their personal brand choose their first and last name as their domain name. I don’t recommend that. Imagine if your website gets penalized by Google and your traffic plummets to almost zero. Now you’re stuck with a trash website with your name on it.

Also, if you want to sell your website later, people will be less likely to buy it if you link your identity to it. Do you think John Smith will love buying your site that bears your name? Probably not.

I created a step-by-step tutorial to teach you how to create your own WordPress website with a beautiful design. It’s easy and fast! You don’t need any knowledge to get started as I take you by the hand. At the end of the video, you’ll have your very own WordPress website.

Watch the video below to get started!

Here are some of the topics covered in the video:

  • Web hosting
  • SSL certificate
  • WordPress admin dashboard
  • Security
  • Theme
  • Plugins
  • Backups
  • Analytics
  • Email setup

Pages

Now that your blog is all set up, let’s talk about some key pages you absolutely can’t ignore. This is the meat and bones of your blog!

First of all, the ‘About‘ page is your chance to introduce yourself to your audience. Tell them who you are, why you started this blog, and what unique perspective you bring. Be genuine, authentic, and let your passion shine through. If you can, show your authority and why people should trust you.

Next, we’ve got the ‘Terms of Service.‘ Now, this may not be the most exciting page, but it’s super important. This is where you lay out the rules and guidelines for using your site, protecting you legally.

Just as crucial is the ‘Privacy Policy page. This tells your visitors what you’ll do with any data you collect, whether it’s emails, cookies, or site analytics. In many countries, having this is a legal requirement.

If you plan to use affiliate marketing, you’ll need an ‘Affiliate Disclosures’ page. This is all about transparency – you’re letting your readers know you may earn a commission by recommending products or services.

Then there’s the ‘Home‘ page. Think of it as the front door to your blog. It should be inviting, easy to navigate, and give a quick snapshot of what your blog is all about.

Your ‘Blog‘ page, well, this is the heart of your operation. This is where you’ll post all your amazing content, so make sure it’s organized in a way that’s easy for visitors to browse and find what interests them.

Finally, a ‘Contact‘ page is a must. This is how your readers, potential collaborators, or businesses can get in touch with you. Make it simple and clear, with an email address or a contact form.

All right, so those are the essential pages you need on your WordPress blog. Each one plays a vital role, so take the time to do them right.

Now let’s move on to our next topic: “Creating Valuable Content”.

STEP 3: CREATING VALUABLE SEO-OPTIMIZED CONTENT

Creating helpful content is your chance to shine and show your expertise! SEO and keyword research are crucial here so your blog shows up when people search for info in your niche.

If you want to rank on Google, you’ve got to create top-notch content.

There are many types of articles you can write:

  • How-to guides,
  • Listicle articles,
  • Product reviews,
  • Statistics,
  • Idea posts,
  • and more!

You want to provide value to your readers, teach them how to do things and guide them when listing and recommending products. To rank on Google and have AI refer people to your articles, you must create the best articles on the subject.

The Internet is flooded with blog articles, so you’ll have to fight to get seen!

E-E-A-T

You need to establish E-E-A-T with your blog. This acronym stands for ExperienceExpertiseAuthoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It’s what Google cares about when ranking content.

Google gets flooded with poor-quality AI content from digital marketers. They can be selective and only show the best content people can trust.

Your job as a blogger is proving to Google that your site is worth showing people. You’ll have to create high-quality, helpful, and engaging content and establish authority with links.

Buy the products and services you review when you can. That way, you’ll have a unique perspective and produce more quality content. Google can detect if you used a product for real, or not.

SEO

It’s a battle to rank on Google for competitive keywords. It’s tough out there! You should not give up. Keep writing valuable and unique helpful content, and you’ll get rewarded over time.

You can use an SEO keywords tool like Ahrefs or Semrush to find keywords to target with traffic potential and limited competition.

Create a content strategy with topical clusters. You start by creating a pillar post, for example, about the best web hosting providers.

Then, you create a constellation of blog posts about related subjects, and you link them to your pillar blog post to establish topical authority and push the pillar posts that make you money.

AI & SEO tools

You can create your articles yourself or with the help of AI tools like ChatGPT or Jasper AI. I use both AI writing tools for making my articles, especially when they are not too technical.

However, when using AI, you should edit your texts heavily to add personality and your own experience. Make them more unique, engaging, and persuasive, and check for facts before publishing.

Artificial intelligence makes many factual mistakes we call hallucinations, so it’s essential to make sure that everything is correct.

You should do SEO on-page optimization first. Include NLP keywords in your text by using a tool like SurferSEO to increase your probability of ranking on Google. NLP stands for Natural Language Processing.

Google uses NLP to better understand search queries and your content relevance. By using the same NLP keywords as your competitors for a particular SEO keyword you want to target, you will be more likely to rank.

I use Surfer SEO to optimize all my articles. I recommend you use this tool or a similar one that lets you add NLP keywords, such as Frase or RankMath, with keywords suggestions by Content AI.

Depending on the competitors your select, Surfer will suggest NLP keywords you can include in your article, as well as the number of words, headings, paragraphs, and images to add.

I also use Grammarly to correct my spelling mistakes and create more engaging content.

The content you create should be unique; it’s vital! Google wants unique, engaging content, so you should avoid plagiarism in your articles, mainly if you use AI.

I use Copyscape Premium to check for plagiarism as it’s the most popular tool, but Grammarly does that too, so it’s up to you.

Internal links

You can link your articles together when it makes sense to improve your SEO. I use the Link Whisper tool to get internal link ideas and to create internal links faster.

External links

Your popularity online is also very important, as it’s a major ranking factor. Google checks the number and quality of external links pointing to your website from authoritative websites.

So, you should try getting these quality websites to talk about you! In my opinion, it’s the most challenging part of blogging. Google wants your content to shine, attracting external links naturally over time as people refer to your excellent content.

You can help with that by creating content that people are more likely to reference, such as statistics blog posts.

SEO tips

I advise against doing anything that would try to game Google. After all, you’re likely not better than AI evolving exponentially. Even if you can outsmart Google now, you’ll likely see your traffic gets hammered in a future Google search update.

I’ve seen many successful bloggers get crushed by a Google update after they used shady tactics to get links.

It’s better to play safe and do the hard work to see Google reward your efforts.

STEP 4: MARKETING YOUR BLOG

Once you’ve got some great content, it’s time to promote it. If you don’t promote your blog, it’s like it doesn’t exist. There is no point in having articles that no one reads!

Nobody will click your affiliate links if they can’t read your blog posts.

Also, consistency and engagement are super important if you want to be successful in marketing. Try to create content people love to engage with.

People have a short attention span; they move on to the next photo or video in no time. Remember that you compete with many cat videos, so try not to be too boring.

By being consistent, people get to know you, and you will build trust with them, slowly creating an audience. It’s especially important on social media, even if you should focus most of your efforts on SEO to get traffic from Google and Bing.

Once you get enough traffic, you can monetize your audience, but not before. So, you should be patient, create lots of content and promote it as much as you can in an ethical way.

Social media and email marketing can be great friends here. Let me show you how I did it.

Social Media

First, once you post content, share it on social media like Twitter (X.com), Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and other major platforms. It will help get your article discovered, and it gives social signals to Google.

If your article is worth sharing on social media and gets engagement, it helps Google understand the value of your content. It also gives the first stats to Google when people read your content.

With a bit of luck, you’ll get valuable links from other websites pointing to your content, increasing your authority in the eyes of Google.

Use WordPress plugins to automate the sharing on social media. You can also use social media scheduling tools like Buffer or Hootsuite to spread the word.

I use the WordPress plugin Blog2Social to automate posting on social media. I also use Sociari for scheduling posts on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter (X.com), LinkedIn, and Instagram.

You can set up plenty of automation to automatically share your new content on many other platforms, such as Quora, Reddit, Tumblr, Medium, and more.

Use AI tools to create unique, tailored content for each platform you want to target, using your blog post as a source. Link each time to your website and see your traffic grow over time.

Guest blog posts

Many people write blog posts on other blogs to get backlinks to their websites. I don’t love that, as you spend your energy writing for someone else and get an unnatural link.

Google is getting smarter with AI. It can detect patterns, and unnatural links, especially since they released their Link Spam update.

PR campaigns

You can get featured by media websites like Forbes, CNBC, Business Insider, Entrepreneur, Yahoo! Finance, or any big publisher relevant to your industry.

Many let you pay to get featured, so it should be easy to promote your personal brand with a public relations or PR campaign.

You can increase your authoritativeness and trustworthiness in the eyes of Google with a good PR campaign in the media.

Email List

It’s also important to set up an email list on your blog to do email marketing later. You can send regular emails to your subscribers to inform them about your new articles, special offers about products you recommend, exclusive tips and tricks, and more.

Use popups with a lead magnet to collect email addresses. For example, you can offer a free cheat sheet to do something, some templates, or an e-book in exchange for their email.

Then, set up an automatic email sequence with a tool like ConvertKit, Klaviyo, or FunnelKit Automations CRM. For example, you can create a welcome email serie to get people to know and trust you better.

Then, you can recommend the products and services of other companies you promote. Later, you will use your email list to sell your own products!

I like to use FunnelKit Automations as a CRM, connected to Amazon SES as an email service provider. But it’s quite technical, and getting approved by Amazon SES is challenging.

So, if you’re not tech-savvy, I recommend you go for ConvertKit instead.

STEP 5: MONETIZING YOUR BLOG

Now, let’s make that money! You can make money blogging through affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, or even selling your own products and services

But how do I make money blogging? Let me share what worked best for me.

When you’re starting, selling your products is hard, as nobody knows and trusts you. However, you can recommend more established businesses with affiliate marketing.

I make the bulk of my money on one of my blogs with affiliate marketing. It’s a very simple concept. You create blog articles to promote products and services and optimize them for ranking on Google.

Optimizing your content to rank on Google is called SEO or Search Engine Optimization

People click on your links with your ID for tracking, and some will buy the products you recommend.

You then get a commission from the company you promote, as they know the sale comes from you.

Software as a Service

SaaS stands for Software as a Service. It’s software that you pay monthly or annually to use, and many of these companies give you recurring commissions for bringing customers to them.

For example, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, and Canva are all SaaS businesses, as you must pay monthly or annually to use their services. You rent software you access via your web browser instead of installing it on your laptop.

As it’s software, it costs them little to provide service to a new customer, so they can afford to pay you monthly for bringing more customers.

Commission rates

You often get 30% of recurring revenue if the customer continues to pay for the service. However, it’s not always like that. Commissions can range from a few percent, let’s say 10%, up to 40% and 50% in rare cases.

Growing startups tend to give better commissions, but they can be hard to sell as they don’t have the brand recognition of established companies. Once they grow enough, they tend to reduce their commission rates to make more money, taking dollars away from you.

On the other hand, lots of big, established companies like Shopify don’t give recurring commissions. Instead, you get a one-time referral bonus, typically ranging from $30 to $200.

However, they are much easier to sell, as everybody knows them.

Some even give even less, like the Amazon Associates Program, with one-time commissions of like 3-4%.

Start promoting big companies as it’s easier to get your first sales to keep motivated and then add startups and less established brands offering recurring commissions. This way, you get a solid business and are more likely to make money online.

As you can expect, promoting business software is very competitive, and you’re not the only one to promote these brands.

Only the last click before a sale counts for attributing a referral. It means that if someone clicks your link and then the link of another affiliate marketer just before buying, you don’t get the commission; they get it.

Brands use an army of thousands of affiliate marketers to promote their products. You’ll have to give the maximum of yourself to beat your competition!

Promoting many brands is also essential, as they can always change the commission structure at any time, remove rewards, and sometimes not pay you for your efforts.

Partnership Management Platforms

You should never rely on 1 brand; it would destroy your business. I make the most money with companies who work with a publisher platform, such as ImpactShareASalePartnerStack, or Partnerize. There is also CJ.com. These platforms are trusted intermediaries between you as an affiliate marketer or publisher and the brand you promote. They track link clicks and pay you directly.

Like that, you can trust that you’ll get paid for the sales you bring to the brands you partner with, they will not game the system, or at least it’s more difficult for them to get away with it.

Apply to affiliate programs

To start with affiliate marketing, once you get enough traffic on your site to feel confident, you can bring customers to the companies you partner with, visit their websites, and apply to their affiliate programs. If they have an affiliate program, you should see a link like “Become an affiliate” in their website’s footer.

Brands will review your site and see if you’re a good fit or not. You should maximize your chances by taking the time to create a good profile on publisher platforms, as well as get traffic to your blog posts before you apply for an affiliate program.

Show the value you bring to the table with your traffic and potential for sales.

You should only add affiliate links to a specific blog post if you see it ranking well on search engines, so you don’t waste your time.

Displays Ads & Sponsorships

You can also monetize your blog with display ads and sponsored posts as your traffic grows. You need to meet specific traffic thresholds to get accepted by ad networks. You can start with Ezoic and later use Adthrive or Mediavine for your display ads.

However, it’s much more challenging to make good money with display ads than with affiliate marketing. You’ll only make a few dollars with less than 10K monthly pageviews.

Sponsored posts work too, but I don’t love the concept. I prefer to write articles in the most authentic way possible. I think it’s not great to put a brand at the top of a listicle article reviewing companies just because they pay you. Instead, I prefer to put companies I really believe in at the top.

Later, after you establish your personal brand with your blog and even YouTube, you can sell your products like online courses, memberships, e-books, or even your own SaaS software.

STEP 6: SCALING YOUR BLOGGING BUSINESS

You’ve got your blog running, and it’s making money. What next? It’s time to scale it up and increase your earnings. Here’s how I scaled my blogging business to reach my first $10K in revenue.

I created lots of SEO-optimized blog articles to reach over 100 without doing any active link-building. I only got natural links from the quality of my content.

Why is it important to create lots of articles? It’s simple, only a small fraction of your articles will rank on the first page of Google and get picked by their AI. Those articles will be your money-making machines. The other articles will sink into oblivion.

Start with 10 articles, then put a goal to reach 50, and then 100. Creating so much content is challenging, but you don’t have to do it all yourself.

I initially used freelance writers from Fiverr to get started until I had my first 50 articles. I edited each blog post heavily to improve quality.

Freelancers on Fiverr want to make money fast. They will not spend as much time as you would do to make your content perfect.

Also, be ready to spend lots of time optimizing the draft content you get if you use cheap beginner freelance writers from Fiverr. Consider using Upwork, too, for more long-term projects.

After I published the first 50 articles I wrote myself and with freelance writers, I changed my strategy by using AI tools.

I started with Jasper and Surfer SEO and now use ChatGPT to help me with content production. You should view AI as an assistant, but you’re the pilot. You’ll still have to write a lot yourself to make your content unique and engaging, sharing your own experience with the world.

It’s crucial that you focus on creating high-quality, helpful content that meets the search intent. Always keep that in mind!

Wait for a few months to get Google to digest your articles, and then add affiliate links if you see you get enough traffic in your stats.

The next step will be to hire writers who can use AI in a meaningful way to help you scale your business. You can reinvest part of the money you make with your business to get help from freelancers and tools.

That way, you’ll grow your business much faster than if you did everything alone.

Also, always look for new growth opportunities, and don’t hesitate to update your strategy depending on how the market evolves.

Google constantly changes its algorithms, and you should always monitor the SEO industry, especially with AI.

CONCLUSION

Blogging is all about consistently creating high-quality, helpful content that Google and its AI will love. Spread the word as much as possible to build authority in your niche.
